Top 7 Workout Mistakes

Of course, as most of you know, I choose to focus on the positive and encourage my clients to do the same. However, I do feel that it is important to address the common mistakes that people make when working out in order to avoid them, and to continue focusing on the "good" of the workout!! If you enjoy working out at the gym or at home, these tips will help you avoid the common mistakes most people make with their workouts.

Workout Mistake #1: Too much too soon

It is very common for someone starting a workout routine to take on too much, only leading to fatigue or injury and a lack of motivation in the long run. If you haven't worked out in 3 years, begin with 1 or 2 bigger workouts at the beginning, and gradually work your way up to your ideal routine.

Workout Mistake #2: Overtraining

Sometimes people think that more is better when it comes to exercise, but that's not always true. There's a delicate balance between slacking off and over training. Find your balance, and remember that rest is an important part of the fitness equation. If you're not sure of where to start, talk to a coach or a fitness trainer to get the assistance you need.

Workout Mistake #3: Improper cool down

If you don't cool down, you put strain on your muscles and joints which can lead to injury and muscle stiffness the next day. Remember to do a cool down lap after a cardiovascular workout, and to always stretch after a heavy lifting session. Your body will thank you.

Workout Mistake #4: The "All or Nothing" approach

Too many people skip their workout when they don't have a full 40 minutes or an hour to exercise. My advice? Use whatever time you have to exercise!! Even if you only have time for a 20 minute jog - go out and DO IT!

Workout Mistake #5: Bad Form

If you don't know how to perform an exercise correctly, you may be doing more harm than good. Talk to a trainer, pick up an exercise book, hire a coach, or ask for a spotter when you train. Your form will not only improve your level of fitness, but will also help you to prevent injury.

Workout Mistake #6: Lack of focus

Always remember to focus on the muscles that you are exercising, and on your task at hand. It's easy to get distracted by overhead TV's, or a good-looking person walking by. Prevent embarrassment and/or injury by focusing on your workout.

Workout Mistake #7: Not enough variety

Just as you get tired of doing the same thing over and over again, so does your body. If you have reached a plateau in your progress, switch things up! You'll have more fun, you'll challenge your body in a new way, and you'll create more balance in your body shape as well.
