New Year’s Business Resolutions
How to make your next twelve months the most successful ever!
Peter F. Drucker
This month, about 100 millions Americans will venture down a well traveled path
paved with bold New Year’s resolutions.
Every year the same question remains…
Will they achieve their goals?
What’s the difference between those who reach their goals and those who don’t?
What’s the difference between making a few New Year’s resolutions…and actually having the resolve and determination to see them through to completion?
A study conducted at the University of Washington seeking to understand the factors that best predict success
in keeping New Years resolutions suggests the following in order to be successful with your own resolutions:
· Have a strong initial commitment
· Keep track of your progress
1. Strong initial commitment
Commitment is the process, which brings out various energies, talents and abilities into alignment with our goals. Both a strong commitment and strong motivation are key elements that will guide and sustain you along the way. How do you access them? It starts by choosing a goal that really matters to you – one that is close to your heart- and committing to make massive progress toward its achievement. When it comes to your business this should be “a biggie” – something which you know is not likely to happen by itself or something you would so love to have in your life that even thinking about it lights up your face. What could that be for you? What goal, if attained would make the biggest difference in your life or your business? What is the single one thing that would bring you the most satisfaction in 2005? Write it down…NOW!
2. Keep track of your progress
The more monitoring you do and feedback you get, the better you will do.
The most compelling reason for building a habit of keeping track of what we are doing is the simple observation that we get more of what we measure.
Commit to taking and tracking 1000 actions in the next year toward your goal.
One thousand actions a year works out to 4 actions a day, 5 days a week. Make your first action writing a list numbered from 1 to 1000 and placing it in a visible place.
Each day schedule something, four steps, however small, that bring your most important goals closer.
