Business Reflections

by Jean-Bernard Gauci

Present-day managers are confronted with a profound reappraisal of the values that had guided them in previous decades when success could be measured according to their firm's healthy cash flow.

The point today is to be just as pragmatic, and still more, especially if we think of the business booming via the Internet today. And I'd say Valérie Orsoni-Vauthey, our CEO, knows that better than anyone else!

Furthermore, pragmatism must be channeled through brand new values such as ecology, and looking out for the well-being of humankind. If Bill Gates, the richest man on Earth - the 1990's "killer bill"- has become the first non-governmental sponsor through his foundation; if Warren Buffet, his apparent "wealth" heir, has followed this path - it is absolutely no accident.

In our business coaching actions, we must put emphasis on the human dimension - humanism, that we have to preserve and to cultivate despite the stress that generates our economic system.
Then, dear colleagues, let's relentlessly cultivate our "inner garden" so that weed won't overshadow our thoughts. Since the dawn of time, man has relied on cultural and moral references in order to preserve his stability and honesty.

Haven't you found your "little red book" yet? Then read Marcus Aurelius - a Roman emperor (b. in AD 121) and you'll be surprised by how relevant his thoughts are today.

Here is a short anthology:

"And if thou shalt strive to live only what is really thy life, that is, present, then thou wilt be able to pass that portion of life which remains for thee up to the time of thy death, free from perturbations, nobly, and obedient to thy own daemon."

"Very little is needed to make a happy life; it is all within yourself, in your way of thinking."

"if thou workest at that which is before thee, following right reason seriously, vigorously, calmly, without allowing anything else to distract thee, but keeping thy divine part pure, as if you shoulst be bound to give it back immediately; if thou holdest to this, expecting nothing, fearing nothing, but satisfied with thy present activity according to nature, and with heroic truth in every word and sound which thou utterest, thou wilt live happy. And there is no man who is able to prevent this."

To Success!
