Just Say NO!
Wise Decision-Making for Smart Pros
In your professional and entrepreneurial life, knowing why you say Yes or No is essential. Your decisions can have serious consequences and chances are that you will be held accountable long after you took your decisions.
So, what happens when you the decision could go either way? Do you just hope for the best as you give an unconvinced Yes? Lots of people end up saying yes to avoid conflict, to not be the bad one, to not deal with tension or simply to not offend others. This is often done while ignoring your intuition, experience, and analytic ability.
Here are some of the many situations that I have seen over and over:
· A partner super excited about a new killer business opportunity
· An excited salesperson wanting to offer a discount to this huge new customer
· A boss asking for last minute changes to your work after the agreed upon deadline
· An average employee requesting a promotion for the Nth time
· An invoice with no explanation or justification
· A report delivered past the deadline asking for approval
· An important prospect refusing to agree to sign a non-disclosure agreement
· etc.
Just say No. Just say no if:
· You are not truly compelled and excited to say Yes
· You feel pressured, manipulated or threatened in any way, shape or form
· Something is not right but you are not sure what
· You are hoping that Yes will be a good decision
· There is a strong element of surprise. This was not planned
· Everybody else said Yes and you have no time to think about it quietly
· It is all emotional excitement with no proof, no tangible verifiable results.
Just say No even when it hurts and congratulate yourself for your courage. There is nothing wrong about asking for more convincing information or standing up for your values and integrity. Do your homework, check all facts, take the time to do it right. Over time, people around you will have learned to respect your work and will trust your decisions. These people will want to be part of your network.
