Anger can take its toll
These days it is hard to go anywhere without seeing or hearing conflict.
In our intensely fast-paced world some people forget to think before speaking and end up blurt out hurtful or hateful things that they probably don't really mean.
Most of fail to use filters and forget to access our judgment before we blow up.
Hair-triggered anger usually comes for self-doubt, unforeseen stress and disappointment. Anger hurts us more than it does the ones we want to hurt.
An eruption of our anger can occur within seconds of a triggered event. Our explosive emotional response may feel like a huge relief at first, but the despondence and guilt that remain lowers our immune system and increases among other things our blood pressure.
Likewise, anger that we let well up inside can impair our sleep and put our heart in jeopardy. Either way, if you are someone with a temper problem, you may want to head it off with the following preventive steps (before your anger gets the better of you):
1- Freeze - Stopping can help you slow down your racing thoughts and give you a chance to step outside of your emotional world wind so you can see you can rationally experience your anger
2- Cool Down - Taking time out can help diffuse the situation and reinstate your body's equilibrium
3- Analyze - Taking a deep a look at the what and how of your anger can give you a healthier perspective and detour your tendency to over-personalize matters
4- Speak - Deciding whether you need to assert, confront, negotiate, ignore, or forgive can help you positively challenge yourself. The latter is less taxing on our psyche, body and relationships
5- Resist - Drinking caffeine or alcohol only ignites your negative emotions and messes with your metabolism. Remember naps are the best thing for feeling refreshed and rejuvenate.
6- Journal - Giving yourself a positive outlet for writing down your negative thoughts. The experience can provide your body and mind with a safe place to step back and see the whole picture.
7- Exercise - Getting aerobic activity can improve your mood and enliven you creative juices.
8- Forgive - Letting go of past resentments can help you embrace optimism and release disappointment. By holding on to anger, you eventually become a prisoner to negative thinking, and bring everyone down around you.
9- Affirm - Telling yourself that you can and will grow from your hurt
helps you see that it is pointless to keep being angry.
